“Thief! Thief! That girl stole my bread!”

You were the aforementioned little girl, about 6 years of age, being accused of theft, and you were currently running away from the man at the stall that sells bread.

“I didn’t steal anything, you old geezer! I paid for it properly!”

“Someone stop her!”

“Oof!” You fell to the floor. “Hey watch it!- Uh oh...”

“Well, well, well... What do we have here? Another stupid kid trying to steal some food?” A member of The Garrison towered over your smaller figure.

“Hey! I’m not a stupid kid! And I wasn’t trying to steal anything! I already paid for it!” The man grabbed the back of your shirt and lifted you into the air. You flailed around wildly trying to escape, the loaf of bread still in your possession. “Let go! Put me down!”

“Not until you admit your crimes and pay for it.” He snatched the bread from you.

“Give it back! I already paid for it!” You kicked the man in the shin, making him drop you, and you snatched the bread back.

“Ah! You damn brat!” You tried to make a run for it but the man caught you by the arm.

“What the hell is going on,” a loud voice boomed from behind. You turned around to a short man with a scowl on his face.

“Oh, Levi Heichou!” The man quickly let go of you and saluted. “This little girl was trying to steal some bread from that stall over there.”

“No I wasn’t! I already told you, I paid for it!”

Levi’s eye twitched. He walked past the man and stood in front of you, casting a considerably large shadow for someone so short. You stepped back a bit, and he shot you an ice cold glare. “Tell the truth. Did you steal it?”

You stared back, determined to prove your innocence. “No I didn’t. I already paid for it. That guy was just trying to make me pay double.”

The stare down lingered for a moment, neither one’s gaze wavered. Levi sighed and walked over the the man at the stall, then gave him the same icy glare he gave you.

“Well? Is she telling the truth?”

The man stepped back a bit, feeling the pressure of humanity’s strongest soldier staring down at him. He averted his eyes before answering weakly. “Y-yes, sir, she is.”

“See! I told you I’m not a liar!”

“Tch. What a sorry excuse for a man. Trying to scam some little girl. You should be ashamed of yourself.”

“I-I am, sir...” he said quietly.

Levi stared at him a little long before walking over to the other man who grabbed you. “And you,” he started, “you should be ashamed of yourself too. Haven’t you ever heard of innocent until proven guilty?”

The man withdrew a bit too and stared at the ground. “I-I have, sir... I’ll be more careful next time.”

“That’s I thought. Now go do your patrols.” Levi glanced at you once more, then walked away. You quickly followed behind him.

“Hey, wait up!” You scampered after him, hot on his tail, and tugged at his pant leg.

“What do you what?”

“I just wanted to thank you for helping me out back there. You don’t see many people standing up for kids now a days.”

“I was just protecting the law like that idiot should have been.”

“Oh... Well, still, thanks! Would you like some of my bread? I know it’s not much but it’s still something.” You broke off a piece and handed it to him.

“No thanks. I can’t take food from a kid. I have my pride as a man. Now scram kid, I have work to do.” He started walking away.

“Wait a minute! What was your name again?”

“Levi. Levi Ackerman,” he said without looking back.

“Well... I’ll see you again!”

He smirked and waved back over his shoulder

“Some day...”

~~~
A few days later, Levi was back walking around in the city after finishing up some business. He grimaced at how filthy the streets were no matter where he went.
“Levi!” He heard a somewhat familiar voice call out to him but couldn’t pinpoint where it came from.
“Over here!” A small hand waved amongst a sea of people walking back and forth. The hand moved closer and closer until the small body attached to it appeared. “Levi!”
He glanced down at you as a form of greeting.
“A ‘hello’ would be nice.”
He rolled his eyes. “Ugh, fine. Hi brat.”
You puffed your cheeks. “I have a name~”
“Not like I know it.”
“It’s (first).”
“Well hello brat.” Your eye twitched from annoyance, making him smirk.
“Jeez Levi, you’re so grumpy.”
“For a brat your age you have a lot of nerve calling humanity’s strongest soldier by his first name.”
“Wooooow~ You must have some real self-esteem issues if you have to call yourself that.” His eye twitched too and you snickered at how easily he got annoyed.
“Tch.” He started walking and you followed.
“Anyways, whatcha out in the city for?”
“Work.”
“Oh. Some cool military stuff?”
“Yeah, sure. Look, why don’t you go home and bother your parents or something?”
You slowed to a stop and looked down. “I... I don’t have any parents...”
He stopped but didn’t turn around, only looked over his shoulder. “You don’t?”
You shook your head. “No... They were in the Recon Corps and died when I was a kid... I mean I had my grandma around to raise me, but she died last year ‘cause she was sick... I couldn’t buy her any medicine.”
“So... Now you’re all alone?” You nodded. “Well, that’s too bad.” He turned to you and patted your head, tussling your (h/l) (h/c) hair. You leaned into his hand a bit, then pulled away, embarrassed and slightly blushing.
“I-I don’t need your sympathy. I’m strong! I don’t need anybody anyways!” You pouted with your nose up in the air. “I’ve been fine all by myself. I even learned how to fight, too.”
“Well, you’d better have. You’re going to need that skill if you want to survive.”
“I know. I bet I’m even good enough to beat you~” you teased.
He smirked. “I’d like to see you try.”
You ran at him and swung your arms in windmill formation, but Levi, being bigger than you and a jerk face, simply put his hand on your forehead and held you back. He chuckled at your pathetic attempt.
“Don’t laugh at me!” You windmill-ed at him faster. “Stop being mean and let me hit you!”
He smirked. “You’ve got some guts kid, I’ll admit that.” He swiftly got behind you and hoisted you onto his shoulder. “But you’ve gotta do better than that to beat me.” He started walking as you flailed around.
“Ahh~! Put me down you midget!” You hit his nicely toned back with your tiny hands.
His eye twitched and he spanked your little butt. “Shut it kid.”
You flushed. “Hey! Y-you creep! Don’t smack a girl’s butt!”
“I’m just trying to punish an unruly child. Now, tell me where your house is so I can drop you off.”
You pouted, arms folded, and waited for a moment, debating on whether or not to tell him. Finally, you complied. “It’s down the street and to the left. You know, you don’t have to carry me. I can walk.”
He started walking. “I’m trying to make sure you, a tiny, helpless little girl, get home safely.”
“I am not tiny or helpless!” You started hitting his back again but were too weak to have any effect. “Just you wait until you put me down! You’re gonna get it!”
Levi rolled his eyes. “Great. I can’t wait.” Soon, you arrived at your house. It was a small, somewhat rundown house with a tiny bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living/dining-room; barely even half the size of a regular house.
“So this is where you live?” he said, eyeing the place as he put you down.
“Yup!” You ran and jumped onto your small, creaky bed. “I know it’s kinda small, but since it’s only me living here, it’s fine.” You patted the spot next to you. “You wanna sit?”
He walked over and sat down silently. “So how do you pay for this place? It’s not like a brat like you could possibly keep a job.”
“I just do some odd jobs for the townspeople. Most of them are really nice except for the merchants. They always accuse us of stealing.”
Levi put his strong arm on top of your head using it as an arm rest. “I see,” he said, looking around the place once again. “Well, I guess it’s an alright place... If you don’t mind the filth.”
“Hey!” You shoved his arm off. “It’s not as bad as most kids’ houses! If you think this is bad, you don’t even want to see theirs.”
“I’m sure you’re right.” He got up and walked towards the door. “Well, I’d better be leaving.”
“Wait!” You ran up to him. “You’re not gonna stay any longer?” You looked up at him with big, (e/c) puppy dog eyes.
“Sorry brat, I have work to do.” He tussled your hair once more. “But I’ll come visit you again.”
“You promise?”
“Yeah.”
You hugged his leg. “Bye.” He patted your back and left.
~~~

About a week later, Levi was back in the city and decided to pay you a visit.

“As an uninvited guest, I can’t walk in empty handed,” he thought. He went to the nearest stall and bought a loaf of bread, then made his way to your house.

“Oi brat, I brought you some-” He paused. You sat in the corner your bed with your knees drawn to your chest, sobbing lightly. You lifted your head and quickly hid under the covers when you saw him.

“Oi. Come out from under there.” You shook your head. He sighed and pulled the blankets off of you. You hid your face in you knees again.

“Would you look at me?” Again, you shook your head. He put the bread down and sat next to you, then patted your head gently. “You wanna tell me what happened?”

“I hate the other kids. They’re so mean,” you sniffled.

“What did they do?”

“They said... They said I was the reason my parents died. They said that they joined the Recon Corps because they didn’t want to be with me! They said they got themselves killed because the corps are weak.” You hugged Levi’s hip tight and sobbed in his lap. “An-and when I told them it wasn’t true they took my money and told me not to get full of myself just because you were hanging around with me.”

Levi sat there, unsure of how the sooth the fragile little girl clinging to him for comfort. Finally, he wrapped an arm around you and pulled you into his lap, rubbing your back up and down.

“Look, don’t listen to those damn brats. They have no clue what they’re talking about. Your parents loved you and I know the reason they joined was to protect you.”

You looked up at him with big, tearful eyes filled with hope. “Really? You mean it?”

He nodded. “Of course.” He slid you off his lap and stood up. “And they’re absolutely fools if they think the corps are weak. We’re the strongest branch out of the three.”

“That’s what I tried to tell them! But when they asked me to prove it I didn’t know what to say... I’ve never seen you guys work so I don’t know if it’s true... But if they’re anything like you then I know they must be strong!”

Levi smirked at you adorably optimistic comment. “Well then, why don’t you come with me to the camp for today? Then when you see those brats again you can tell them how strong we are.”

You eyes lit up. “Really?!” He nodded and you jumped on him, arms wrapped around his neck, legs wrapped around his sides.

He supported you with his arms. “Ugh. You’re a lot heavier than you look.”

“Hey! You’re not supposed to talk about a lady’s weight!”

Levi looked around. “Where? What lady?” he teased. You puffed your cheeks and hit his arm. “Oi, do you want to come with me or not?” You nodded innocently. “Then I suggest you sit quiet and don’t squirm around, got it?”

You nodded, blushing. “Yes, sir...”

“That’s what I like to hear. Now, do you want me to carry you or do you want to walk on the filthy ground?” You blushed harder and his your face in the crook of his neck. “Then I guess I’m carrying you.” He readjusted you in his arms and took you all the way to the camp.

~~~
You and Levi made it into his office without being seen. He set you down and shut the door.
“Alright brat, try not to cause too much trouble-” The door flew open and Levi’s favorite mad scientist ran in and gasped. He face-palmed realizing what a terrible mistake he made.
“Levi! Who is this adorable little girl and why haven’t I met her yet?!”
“Levi,” you asked, hiding behind his leg, “who’s that lady?”
“No one you want to know.” Hanji walked towards you but Levi moved in between the two of you. “Listen shitty-glasses, you didn’t see anything here, got it?”
“Aww fine~ But only if I get to hug her just once~”
“No.”
“Hey everyone~ Shorty brought a-”
“Ugh. Would you shut up?” He turned back to you. “Are you okay with this?”
You shrugged your shoulders. “I guess.”
Levi sighed and turned back to her. “Fine but don’t get-” Hanji squealed and ran up to you. “Crazy...”
She bent to your height. “What’s your name little girl?”
“(f-first),” you said shyly.
“Eek! She’s so cute!” She picked you up and squeezed you tight. “Oh Levi, can I keep her? She’s just too cute!”
You squirmed around and reached out for Levi. “L-Levi~!”
He came to your rescue and snatched you away, holding you in his arms protectively as all four of your limbs wrapped around him. “No, you can’t. Now get out.”
Hanji pouted. “Aw fine~ Bye bye (first)~!” She walked out and shut the door behind her.
“Are you okay? You didn’t catch any of her crazy, did you?”
You giggled. “No~ But she was kinda funny.”
“God, it’s already spread.” He put you down and sat on his couch. “Well, what do you want to do?”
“Can we go outside? I wanna see everyone train!”
“Are you sure? After what just happened?” You nodded with big puppy dog eyes. He sighed, “Alright, fine,” then took your hand and led you outside.
There, you met all types of people: squad leaders, cadets, more crazy scientists, each one teasing Levi about how cute he looked hold your little hand. Soon it was dinner time and everyone gathered in the mess hall to eat.
“I’ve gotta say,” Hanji started, “she’s pretty cute to be hanging out with someone so grumpy.”
“Hehehe, you got that right Hanji,” Eren said. Levi shot him a cold glare and he hid behind Mikasa.
“Levi~” You tugged at his sleeve.
“What, brat?”
“I can’t reach over the table that well.”
“Well, what do you want me to do about it? Feed you?”
You flushed. “N-no!”
“Yes!” Hanji yelled. “That would be so cute~!”
Levi rolled his eyes and pulled you into his lap.
“Ah! W-what are you doing?!” You tried to get away but he held you in place.
“I’m trying to help you. Now sit still and let me feed you,” he said bringing a spoon full of food up to your mouth.
“I can do it myself!” You grabbed the spoon and started eating from his plate, face still beet red from embarrassment. “I’m a big kid,” you grumbled, mouth full of food.
Levi sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “What am I gonna do with you?”
“I must be in heaven... Because this level of cuteness is just killing me!” Hanji squealed and flailed around like a fangirl. Everyone else at the table stared with hearts for eyes.
“Ugh. Hurry up so we can leave.”
“Okay~” You ate as fast as you could when you saw Levi take a sip of his tea. “You know, you hold cups really weird.”
His eye twitched. “Okay, we’re done here.” He slid you off his lap and started walking to his office.
“Hey! Wait up!” You ran after him and stretched your arm out. “Hand.”
“What?”
“Hold my hand~” He rolled his eyes and picked you up. You blushed as he carried you to his office.
“Alright, well, you go draw or something. I have some work to finish up.”
“Okay~” You grabbed some pens and paper from his desk and sat on the couch to color. Levi sat down and began working. After about an hour or two, you started yawning heavily.
“What the hell’s wrong with you?”
You rubbed your eyes, hopped of the couch, and walked to him. “I’m tired~ Can we go to bed?”
Levi sighed and got up out of his chair. “Come on, let’s go.” He lead you into his room and threw one of his shirts at you. “Change into this.”
“T-turn around.”
“What?”
“Turn around~!” You blushed. “You’re such a perv~ Trying to watch a pretty lady like me change her clothes. Hmp!” You pouted and closed your arms with your nose in the air.
“You're kidding right? Why would I have a thing for a child?” He turned around. “Just hurry up, would you?”
You quickly changed your shirt and jumped into his bed. “Okay~ I’m done~”
“Finally.” Levi stripped off his shirt and climbed into bed. You hid under the covers and pushed him away. “What are you doing now?”
“P-p-put a shirt on!” You blushed, still pushing him away.
“Ugh,” he groaned. He got up and put a fresh shirt on. “Are you happy now?”
You nodded. “Thank you.” Before laying back down in bed, you got out and took a necklace you’d been wearing off and set it on Levi’s night stand.
“What’s that?”
“It’s my locket. It has a picture of my mom and dad. I never go anywhere without it.” You ran back to the bed and climbed in. “Okay, now let’s sleep!” You bounced up and down excited for him to join you.
“Calm down, brat. It’s just sleep.” He got in and you cuddled up to him.
“Yeah, but I’ve never slept in a nice bed before. Especially with anyone else.”
“Whatever you say.” He reached over and turned off the light.
You snuggled up to him. “Goodnight Levi.”
“Night brat.”
